Music Lessons

Our Teaching Philosophy

UNLOCK YOUR CREATIVE POTENTIAL

“Music has been shown to activate some of the broadest and most diverse networks of the brain.” — Harvard Health

Learning music is about much more than singing or playing an instrument. It is a means of connecting with creativity to become a more fully, authentically self-expressed person. Lessons address not only practical technical considerations, but also the ineffable aspects of creativity as a spiritual practice.

Lessons focus on empowering you to develop healthy practice routines and to better understand how music works on an artistic, technical and theoretical level. Learn the principles of music theory as they relate to constructing melodies, chords, scales, arpeggios and rhythms. Incorporate aural skills and ear training exercises to enable the music you hear inside to be expressed on any instrument/voice. Lessons offer tools for performing in any style — solo or with others — and are guided by your questions and interests.

  • “If you can walk, you can dance. If you can talk, you can sing.” — African Proverb

Learning to sing, while it is partly an artistic and technical craft to create beautiful things, is about empowering your authentic voice/self so you can be more fully and truly expressed.

We will learn vocal exercises and techniques to improve tone, volume control, range, clarity and power, as well as teachings related to the diet of the voice, and how to use your heart with your voice to connect with the throat chakra. Singing is deeply connected with creativity and communication.

The esophagus is one of the first parts of the human body that develops in utero. The physical, emotional, and psychological environment we are formed in can have a major impact on our ability to communicate and express ourselves freely.

This workshop is committed to creating a safe space for you to connect with your voice, release fear and shame, and to realize that you have unique, powerful, and healing vibrations inside of you.

Through vocal exercises, mantras, and sacred songs we will connect with the diaphragms, muscle groups, and energy centers of the body involved in producing sound. We will increase our awareness and control of these areas, and realize how clear and authentic self-expression can strengthen and improve our communication in all areas of life.

  • Learning to play the flute is a powerful way to connect with the breath. At once meditative and healing, oxygenation also provides a range of benefits for the brain and the entire physical body.

Learn breath control and fingerings for a variety of traditional flutes from around the world, such as Native American flutes, bansuri, quena, shakuhachi, overtone flutes and more. Message us to find out if we can help with your particular flute.

  • Songs, chants and mantras are found all over the world. In general, they exalt various aspects of life and consciousness. Work with one of our song carriers to help you learn specific songs, or discover new material through personalized recommendations based on your interests and intentions. You may also learn to sing or play these songs with a range of instruments such as guitar, harmonium, shrurti box, frame drum, etc.

  • Music theory is, in essence, the alphabet, grammar and syntax of music. Music theory is expressed through various ancient systems of science and philosophy that bridge the worlds between language, physics, mathematics and cosmology.

Knowing what notes belong to a key allows you to determine what key an instrument or song is in. Knowing what notes belong to a chord allows you to choose instruments that harmonize well together. Practicing ear training (also known as ‘aural skills’) will dramatically improve call and response, as well as your ability to translate the music you hear inside through an instrument. Understanding rhythm, meter and form speeds up the process of learning melodies and memorizing songs, as patterns emerge. All of this enhances one’s capacity for emulation, composition and improvisation.

  • There are countless approaches to songwriting and composition, ranging from freely improvised to highly organized forms. Work with one of our experienced writers to help you explore the possibilities, and gain deeper insight into lyricism, harmony, form, instrumentation and arrangement.

  • Learn to use a wide range of instruments for healing and meditation, such as:

    • Crystal and metal singing bowls

    • Shruti box, harmonium

    • Tuning forks

    • Shakers. chakapas and rattles

    • Gongs

    • Chimes, bells and cymbals

    • Charangos and other stringed instruments

    • Native flutes and a range of other instruments

  • Drums are many, rhythm is one. Learn techniques and rhythms for percussion instruments from around the world:

    • Djembe

    • Frame drum | Medicine Drum

    • Tablas

    • Cajon

    • Shakers | Rattles

      …and many more

  • These ancient techniques are powerful methods for connecting with sound. The Didgeridoo is an aboriginal instrument with a rich and complex history. Learning to play didgeridoo can provide a range of psychophysical benefits.

Throat singing is found throughout the world, but is perhaps best known through exponents of Mongolian, Tibetan and African culture. Throat singing is a mesmerizing vocal technique in which the singer learns to separate a fundamental note from the ‘overtones’ related to it, creating the fascinating illusion that multiple voices are singing simultaneously.
